Adventure Day 9: Last shoot in Washington

May 12, 2010

So today as a shoot went by very quickly. It was really because things went so well, time just went by real fast. Today’s segment was based around catnip again.  We checked out of our hotel and headed out into the farm country. We met the owners and got started in learning more about Cat Nip. Everyone there was quite friendly and knowledgeable about the topic so it really made everything easy and fast. Really the only downside of the day is being cursed by my Irish skin. I applied sun screen yet just being out in the sun all day I still got pretty burned. We were not supposed to be wrapped up until close to six but, we were able to get out by three. After a late lunch I said goodbye to the crew and I have started by way down south to California. I have to be in San Francisco by Thursday.  I only had to drive just about two hours and now I am currently in Herminston Oregon. It is literally on the side of the highway but its a nice decent hotel so no complaints at all. The best news is I got my replacement bank card! Even though it was only two days having close to no money was a really depressing thing. One of the things in this particular job and trip is how much I am learning. Everyday I am learning something from everyone on my team to not only get better at what I do, but also just to learn more about what goes into the daily work of production. It has not even been a full week of production but as I leave our first state I really am learning allot and I am very excited to see what else I learn out there and how to improve and get better.

The one thing I learned today though is I need stronger sun block.

Adventure Day 6: First Day of Shooting

May 9, 2010

So today was the actual first day of work and shooting for the show, and boy was it long and productive. So on this show I am classified as Production Assistant, however that translates into basically jack of all trades and does a little bit of everything…for everyone. Load the equipment, unload the equipment, set this up, get directions, figure out food, and sometimes do 3 different things at once asked by 3 different people. That being said  there is also times when I actually get to do some shooting which is very exciting. It can be very tough and draining at times being asked to do so many things for so many hours, however it is also a very good learning experience on how productions actually happen.

So we left our hotel at 7:45 am and did not return till past 8pm. And as long as that sounds that is pretty standard for how our shoots are going to go. Also for me because I am also driving the equipment to various states there can be a full week to a week and a half until I have a day off or so. When I am back home in July I will probably sleep for a week, but until then will just have to endure.

So today’s shoot was interesting because of allot of unexpected occurrences. Like I said for confidentially reasons I cannot go into too much details about this show but I can tell you a few things. We were supposed to meet up with a guy who does animal rescue. While heading out to start are day we discovered that he got called in for a job so we were able to see a real rescue in progress which was something we did not expect to get beforehand. That took up most of the morning and then headed off to our next segment. We were supposed to meet up with a family that was helped by our professional and hear there story. However along the way we almost literally stumbled into a pet show. We found it by accident and spent a quick half-hour getting interviews. I don’t know if we are actually going to use it for the show but because we just found it, it did not hurt to get it. The rest of the shoot went very well and on schedule, but it was just very long. The only bad thing that really happened was sadly our professional had his car overheat and had to be abandoned.

Seattle has been really gorgeous, everyone we have talked to so far has said we are very lucky because this is the first weekend where they have had good weather and has not been raining. I can only hope the weather stays this well for tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday after our shoot load up the Van and start my trek to SanFransico stopping in a random place in Oregon.

Actually I’m lying there was another bad thing that happened. Somehow from yesterday to today I have misplaced my ATM card. This is sort of a big deal because my ATM card is the only way I can get to the funds my job has provided for me. I currently have less then five dollars in my wallet, so this is sort of a problem. I have already put money on my credit card, however that won’t be available until Monday. My parents apparently have a duplicate (which is insanely lucky) but that can’t be sent to me until Tuesday. So this is an issue that can be resolved but I’m wondering how I am going to get by on essentially two dollars tomorrow. We will just have to see.

Just another aspect of my adventure!
